City of Sanibel

As recovery continues, how can Sanibel build back stronger and more resilient? This planning effort will gather community input about ideas for enhanced resiliency and connectivity throughout the island.

Plan to participate in the workshop July 10-12 and share your ideas!

Sanibel Overview

The island city of Sanibel is located along the Florida Gulf coast and is home to sandy beaches, native vegetation, and primarily small-scale development.  The J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge has made a lasting impact on the island’s natural beauty and ecological systems.  The historic Sanibel Lighthouse anchors the eastern end of the island while Blind Pass to the west leads to the island of Captiva.  A vast majority of the island remains natural and protected, with trails and shared use pedestrian/bike pathways linking parks, beaches, and neighborhoods.  As recovery continues, it is important to build back stronger and more resilient while continuing to maintain the community vision to protect ecological systems and guide future improvements that respect the natural environment and the island’s cherished way of life.

Sanibel Community Overview

Sanibel Focus Areas

Building upon previous City planning efforts, there is an opportunity to increase resiliency through enhanced citywide connectivity, including expanded pedestrian and bike pathways. In the interest of increasing Sanibel’s resiliency in times of emergencies, concepts are being evaluated for a new barge landing site near the causeway. The potential to retrofit and improve some of the island’s canal seawalls using sustainable design approaches is an opportunity to increase resiliency to future sea level rise and storm events. The Sanibel Island Golf Course area has been identified as an opportunity site where there is potential for future public improvements; should there be a park here? Or a bicycle/pedestrian trail connection? Tell us what you think. The Town Center area has been identified as an opportunity site where future improvements could increase resiliency and create a more complete community center, with enhanced and safe connectivity for pedestrians and cyclists.
