Island Connectivity

Fort Myers Beach is located on Estero Island, a 6 mile-long barrier island in the Gulf of Mexico. The island is connected to the mainland by two bridges, Matanzas Pass Bridge to the north and Big Carlos Pass Bridge to the south. Estero Boulevard serves as the main route across the island. Neighborhoods are organized along streets and canals that link the bayfront to the beach. The commercial center of the island is located at the base of Matanzas Pass Bridge and along Old San Carlos Boulevard. This island is designated by FEMA as a Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA) and properties are mapped in either the Flood Zone VE or AE. Both Flood Zone VE and AE are at high-risk of flooding and are often referred to as the 100-year flood zone. In addition to flooding from heavy rain events, the island has additional exposure due to storm surge. As recovery continues, it is important to understand flood designations and regulations to build back stronger and more resilient.

Existing Conditions, Project Focus Areas

Newton Beach Park

Newton Beach Park, located mid-island at 4650 Estero Boulevard, has a long history of community and culture.  Once the location of Jim and Ellie Newton’s Seven Seas Cottage, the beachfront property was acquired by the Town in 2003 as a passive park and community gathering place for all to enjoy.  The Seven Seas Cottage was lost in the hurricane and the park was severely damaged.  As a beloved beachfront community park, the return of Newton Beach Park can not only serve recreational needs but also demonstrate best practices in beach restoration, natural plantings, and green infrastructure.

Times Square

Times Square is at the north end of Estero Island at the base of Matanzas Pass Bridge.  Once considered one of the most iconic areas of Fort Myers Beach, the vibrant downtown space was destroyed in the hurricane.  With its beachfront location and at the terminus of Old San Carlos Boulevard, there is the opportunity to rethink Times Square and build back a lasting space that once again serves as the heart of the community.  Today, the plaza space continues to be used as a center of community activity with festivals, events, and markets while adjacent properties wait to be rebuilt or repurposed.
